As a truly independent preparatory school, we have no ties to a secondary feeder school. The main advantage of this is that we are free to assist your child in preparing for the best secondary option for them. Many of our students go on to achieve places at:
- The Crossley Heath Grammar School
- North Halifax Grammar School
- Heckmondwike Grammar School
- Bradford Grammar School
- Wakefield Girls' High School
- Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield
- Rishworth School, Halifax
- Hipperholme Grammar School
- Huddersfield Grammar School
- Silcoates School, Wakefield
- Woodhouse Grove School, Apperley Bridge
Many students who have had secure preparation at primary level and wish to apply to fee-paying secondary schools, also often qualify for additional bursaries and scholarships, due to academic excellence, sporting achievements, music scholarships, etc.
Should you wish for your child to enter back into the state school system from secondary age, we can be sure that they receive the best possible start in life, and are confident that they will excel in any state secondary school environment.
We begin to include formal 11+ preparation into general classwork from the beginning of Year 3. As the standards required to gain a place, especially in a state grammar school, are increasing all the time, early preparation is key to success. We work with parents to assist with your choices for secondary school, and then tailor your child's programme in line with your preferred school options.
There is not a standard 11+ test for all secondary schools. Each school exam will take place at a different time of the year, and consist of different tested elements. More importantly, they all vary between different academic levels. For this reason, it is important that we have continual communication with parents to ensure that the type and level of preparation is appropriate to the schools that you wish to apply for.
Free Additional 11+ Tuition
As the demand for 11+ preparation for The Crossley Heath Grammar School, North Halifax Grammar School and Heckmondwike Grammar School is growing, we have teamed up with our close friend and tuition colleague, Geoff Storer of 11 Plus School (11plusschool.co.uk). Geoff and his team offer additional 11+ tuition for Year 5 pupils each week as an after school activity within The Mount School. This additional 11+ tuition is free of charge to all students who attend The Mount School.
Many of you may already know of Geoff from his work as a private 11+ tutor in Halifax. With the support that the class teachers can provide, along with our personal expertise in 11+ preparation, and also teaming up with Geoff to offer an extra layer of support, the standards of 11+ grammar school preparation, should you wish your child to sit the free grammar school tests, can be nothing short of first class.
What our parents say
"Choosing a school for your child when they are 3 years old and never experienced a nursery is challenging. I looked at various prep schools and as soon as I walked into the grounds of The Mount I knew it was the place for my son.
I have never regretted the decision; my son is now 11 and has loved his time at The Mount. He has grown from a shy child with little confidence to a polite, helpful, caring young man all values he has learnt at The Mount.
There is an active sports timetable, which he loves, including running club, football, tennis and swimming to name a few. There is also many an outlet for his creative side with film club, musical theatre and piano being his favourites.
For me, as a parent, I have found that anything that can be dealt with in school is, and communication from the teachers is excellent should there be anything I need to be made aware of.
As I write this, James is on his final week long residential trip to the Isle of Man with his friends and classmates, making more amazing memories associated with The Mount. This is before he starts his senior school life in September at his first choice grammar school, Crossley Heath. This is the final gift from the owners and teachers at The Mount School; the support, work ethic and exam coaching he needed to secure his place in that school.
I will never be able to thank the school enough."
