Form III

Autumn Term

It is our aim in Form III to encourage your children to become more independent in their thinking and completion of tasks. Pupils will be expected to make positive decisions about their work and behaviour. We build on all the wonderful learning experiences and skills acquired in Form II and develop the foundations for their future learning.

In English, we will be exploring familiar settings, studying Traditional stories and short narratives, further developing our vocabulary through identifying and using powerful verbs and adjectives. We will work on story planning, including work on setting and characters. Basic punctuation and correct use of grammar are priorities in Form III.                                                                                                        Poetry is always a favourite, with attractive work produced for our displays. To begin with, we will be concentrating on shape poetry and then explore ways of expressing feelings through poetry. The idea that poems do not have to rhyme often comes as a surprise!

Our non-fiction work will include the study of information texts, making use of Contents and Index pages. then pupils will learn how to write organized, effective instructions which will support our Design Technology topics for this Term.

We will read a Form novel together, to include some quiet and relaxed time. This will be Skellig by David Almond. Pupils' expressive vocabulary and reading skills are extended as they observe the teacher's use of expression, intonation and fluency.

In Maths, we will continue to revise and develop our pupils knowledge of basic mathematical concepts and operations, skills with number and organisation of workings. We encourage the children to check their answers and become more agile with their mental arithmetic calculations.

The specific topics will include money, shape, space and symmetry and data handling with some fun activities involving collection of class and school information. Other areas to be covered are telling the time, reading both analogue and digital displays and exploring word problems to ensure application of skills throughout the term. Work with fractions will also begin this term!

In Design Technology, pupils will enjoy investigating different shaped and sized packaging and will then be creating their own working hard to be more exact in their measurement and making the finished product attractive. Christmas arts and crafts will add colour and a festive atmosphere to the end of term.

We will then be investigating the topic of structures with a specific focus on Geodesics. The children do get very excited when they realise their task is to build their own 'Geodesic Dome' structure!

In ICT, we will be developing our word processing skills experimenting with fonts, setting out, text colour and borders to prepare for pupils own writing.

In Religious Education, pupils will be learning about signs and symbols we encounter in everyday life and how certain symbols are associated with Christianity. Pupils will then learn about the Hindu faith and have the opportunity to handle original artefacts. We will learn about the significance and explore other fascinating stories and traditions.of Diwali.

In PSHE, we will be engaging in discussion about relationships in the classroom and the playground, including issues to do with competition and co operation.

Pupils will also be completing spelling, times tables and mental arithmetic tests on a weekly basis to continue monitoring their progress in these areas. Every day includes a time for individual reading and each child reads to me once a week. Completed books can be changed at any time.

Form III is full of exciting activities and events. This term, we are planning a visit to MAGNA as well as to the Alhambra pantomime at the close of the term.
